If you run a business and have a website or email address, your domain is one of the most important things you own. Yet most business owners don’t fully understand what it is, how it works, or why it’s so important to be in control of it.

This quick guide will walk you through what a domain actually is, how it connects to your website and email, the difference between domain hosting and website hosting, and why choosing the right provider matters

What is a Domain?

Your domain is your online address. It’s what people type into a browser to find your website (like yourbusiness.com.au). You need to own a domain to have a website or a professional email address.

You purchase a domain through a domain registrar and this is where things can get a little messy if you’re not careful.

Why I Recommend VentraIP (and Not Just Any Registrar)

I personally use VentraIP for all domain purchases. They’re an Australian-owned company with real Australian customer support. One time I had an issue with a domain and was able to call them at 11pm on a Saturday night. I spoke to a real person straight away, and the issue was fixed within minutes. That kind of service is rare.

Their domains are also cheap (usually under $30/year) and they don’t play the usual tricks you see with shady resellers.

Watch Out for Dodgy Domain Sellers

If you search “buy a domain” on Google, the top results are usually paid ads from resellers. They often:

  • Charge $100 to $150+ per year for the exact same domain you can get elsewhere for $20 to $30

  • Offer a first-year “discount” of 80%, then charge an inflated price the following year

Many business owners don’t realise this until it’s too late and they’re stuck paying more every year for something that should be affordable.

I don’t recommend Crazy Domains due to poor customer support. GoDaddy can be hit or miss depending on the issue. That’s why I stick with VentraIP.

Why You Should Own Your Domain (Not Your Developer or IT Guy)

Your domain is the key to your digital business. If you lose access or don’t own it directly:

  • Your website and emails can stop working without warning

  • You’re locked out of your online presence

  • Fixing it can be stressful, time-consuming, and expensive

That’s why I always recommend you purchase your own domain and keep full control over it. You can give access to people who help you (like a web designer or IT provider), but it should be under your name, your email, and your billing details.

Handy Tips for Registering a Domain

1. Choose the Right Ending

In Australia, .com.au is the most trustworthy and widely recognised. If you serve international clients, .com is great too. I recommend registering both so no one else can grab the variation.

Buying multiple versions of your domain helps prevent confusion or impersonation. For example, if someone types yourbusiness.com instead of yourbusiness.com.au and ends up on a spammy site, they might think it’s yours and never come back.

You can buy multiple domains and point them all to your main website. It’s a simple way to protect your brand.

Just keep in mind: purchasing a domain is not the same as registering your business, company, or trademark. It’s simply to cover your online presence.

2. Keep it Short and Easy to Type

When choosing a domain, make it simple to remember and easy to type.

My old business was called Ashgrove Digital Marketing, and my email address was info@ashgrovedigitalmarketing.com.au. Not exactly quick or memorable.

Now it’s hello@visibelle.com.au and much easier for people to use and remember.

What Are DNS Records?

Once you own a domain, DNS records are what tell the internet where everything should go. DNS stands for Domain Name System, and it works like an address book.

DNS records link your domain name to:

  • Your website hosting (so when someone visits your domain, they see your website)

  • Your email service (so messages sent to your domain email go to the right inbox)

  • Other services like Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or landing page tools

You don’t need to manage DNS records every day, but when you change providers, launch a website, or set up email, this is where it happens.

If you’re hosting with us, we manage these records for you to keep everything working smoothly.

What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL certificate adds the padlock and “https” to your website address, showing that it’s secure.

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, and it protects your website visitors by encrypting the data they send through forms or payments. It also helps build trust and can improve your Google ranking.

If your website is hosted with us, we help issue and install this for you as part of the setup.

Domain Hosting vs Website Hosting vs Email Hosting

This part can be confusing, so here’s a quick breakdown:

1. Domain Hosting

This is where your domain name lives. You pay a small annual fee (usually under $30) to register the domain and keep it active. Companies like VentraIP handle this.

2. Website Hosting

This is the space where your website files are stored. Think of it like renting a shop where your website lives. If you want to build and manage your own site (like with WordPress), you’ll need hosting. VentraIP also offers solid WordPress hosting.

We can also help manage this if you don’t want to deal with the setup.

3. Email Hosting

This is the service that powers your email accounts using your domain (like hello@yourbusiness.com.au). You can host email in the same place as your domain, or use a service like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.

If you’re a micro business or you’re used to Gmail, Google Workspace is an easy choice. If you’re part of a team or you’re coming from a corporate background and prefer Outlook, Microsoft 365 might be a better fit.

It’s also handy to have your domain and email in the same place, especially when something needs fixing.

Keep Everything in One Place (If You Can)

It’s much simpler to manage your domain, website, and email when they’re all under one login. You don’t have to keep everything together, but if something breaks, it’s a lot easier to troubleshoot when everything is connected.

VentraIP offers domain hosting, email hosting, and WordPress website hosting so if you want to keep it simple and under one roof, they’re a great choice.
