CREATING A WEBSITE THAT FEELS RIGHT
Overview
When Illuminate Supports first came to us, they weren’t looking for just any website—they had a very clear vision. They’re in the business of helping people with disabilities live more independent, fulfilling lives. But here’s the thing: they hated the way many websites in their field relied on photos of people with disabilities or those staged, cheesy stock images to get attention.
For them, it didn’t feel right. They didn’t want to use anyone’s face to push their services, and they were determined to create something more authentic. That’s where we came in.
The Design Challenge
The biggest hurdle was obvious: how do you create warmth and connection without using the traditional route of photos? Most websites lean on images of smiling faces to build trust, but Illuminate Supports didn’t want that. They wanted a site that felt real but without pictures of people that could feel exploitative or fake.
Another challenge was making sure the website was as easy to use as possible. The people visiting this site might be in tough situations or feeling stressed, so the last thing we wanted was a complicated layout. We needed to create a space that was calm, clear, and helpful.
How We Tackled It
So, we got to work. Instead of relying on photos of people, we used the design itself to create a sense of care. We picked soft, calming colours—clean whites, gentle greys, and warm touches of orange. These colours gave the website a welcoming feel without the need for any over-the-top visuals.
Instead of stock photos, we added simple icons and graphics to make the site easy on the eyes. The idea was to let visitors get the information they needed without feeling overwhelmed by images that didn’t resonate with the real values of Illuminate Supports.
But it wasn’t just about the look. The words had to do a lot of the heavy lifting too. We wrote everything in a straightforward, friendly way, like one person talking to another. No fancy language or corporate speak—just clear, caring words that matched the kind of service Illuminate Supports provides.
In the end, we helped Illuminate Supports build a website that felt true to who they are. It’s a place where people can go to find the help they need, without feeling like they’re being sold something. And as Illuminate Supports continues their important work, their new site will be there to welcome more people into their community.
